How Villa Gertrud changed my life

Your hostess Lisbeth shares her story:

“Years ago, my daughter and I spent a night in Malmo at a B&B. The experience in the communal kitchen was thoroughly wonderful, as we cooked our breakfast in the company of so many sweet and exciting people. That meal was one of the best I’ve ever had!

I took the feeling with me, yearning to recreate that communal and international spirit closer to home.

As fate would have it, I soon discover the empty property that used to be the Old Sailors’ Home at Kolding Harbour, and it gets me thinking….and acting. After some thinking, talking and negotiation I manage to take over the old house, leaving my secure job and spending all my savings on renovations. This house, the harbour and its history are worth preserving and should be cherished as part of our local culture.

In the spring of 2016 Villa Gertrud is finally able to open its doors to guests, offering a communal spirit, an international atmosphere and budget-friendly accommodation to suit everyone’s needs. I love it when my guests meet in the breakfast room, talking and laughing while enjoying quality food.

I commit resources and offer support to projects that improve the quality of life in Kolding. I strive to achieve more sustainability with every choice I make: consumption, mental health and social issues.

Villa Gertrud was my windfall, an eternal challenge and a rewarding life project. I am so glad I followed my dream.

The name Gertrud was my grandmother’s; she came to Denmark from England. I am sure that must have been her greatest adventure. Well, Villa Gertrud is mine!”
